The Azraq carp-toothed belongs to the Carp-toothed family.
External signs of the Azraqian carpfish
The Azraq carpfish is a small fish with an elongated body up to 5 cm. It is painted pale silver with black spots scattered throughout the body. Males are smaller than females, but they look more elegant.
The fish is decorated with a picture consisting of alternating vertical light and dark stripes. The fins are yellow, edged with a wide black stripe and are located closer to the tail.Azraq carpfish (Aphanius sirhani).
The spread of the Azraqian carpfish
The ancient oasis of Azraq, located in the Syrian desert, currently owned by modern Jordan, is considered to be the birthplace of the Azraqian carpfish.
Habitats of the Azrakian carp
The Azraq karpozubik lives in fresh water bodies of the oasis Azrak, which is represented by wetlands with diverse vegetation.
Nutrition of the Azraqian Carpenter
In its natural habitat, the Azrackian Carpenter feeds on algae, aquatic plants, worms, small crustaceans, insects, their larvae and other zooplankton. When kept in an aquarium, fish should be fed daily, eaten to dry and meat food: bloodworms, live or frozen daphnia, brine shrimp.Azrackian Carpentiks are endemic to the Jordanian waters.
It is necessary to add herbal supplements to the diet: flakes from spirulina algae. Proper nutrition is of particular importance during the breeding period, with a lack of proteins it is hardly possible to get full-fledged offspring.
Reasons for the decrease in the number of Azraq carpfish
At the beginning of the 90s of the last century, the Azrakian carp carp almost disappeared in its habitat. The unreasonable activity of man and the uncontrolled use of water resources turned out to be the fault. From ancient times, the oasis was the only source of fresh water in this region; trade caravan routes also passed through it. The area of wetlands with diverse vegetation was more than 12 km². Numerous species of African animals lived here: lions, rhinos, cheetahs, hippos, elephants.
Water entered the oasis from two large underground sources, but since 1960, numerous deep wells began to be drilled to supply Amman, as a result, the water level dropped sharply, and after 30 years the sources completely dried up. The area of unique land has decreased tenfold, most plants and animals have disappeared.Azrackian carps notches are predatory aquarium fish.
Protection of the Azraq Carpentogs
International environmental organizations, worried about the state of the oasis and the reduced species diversity of plants and animals, have sounded the alarm.
Currently, a program has been launched to save the surviving species and restore the oasis to at least a tenth of its original area.
For these purposes, it is necessary to pump water into the oasis ponds.
At present, the situation is forecasted by international environmental organizations to be stable. The Azraq Reserve has been created in unique lands. The Azrakian carp carp is protected in its habitats together with other animal species.
Conditions for keeping an Azrackian carpfish in the aquarium
The habitat temperature is 10 - 35 ° C. In winter, the water temperature should not exceed twenty degrees, otherwise the fish stop reproducing and live in captivity much less than the prescribed period. The pH value is 7.5-8.5, slightly alkaline environment. Water hardness is medium, within 10-26 dGH. The bottom of the aquarium is covered with fine gravel or coarse sand. Lighting is not too bright. Water is still. For the content of the Azraq carpfish, the aquarium is selected with a capacity of 100 liters or more.
Peculiarities of the content of the Azrackian carpfish in the aquarium
The Azraki karpozubik is successfully bred in warm countries in open waters. Fish also tolerate content in a home aquarium. To do this, it is enough to create a moderate flow in water without heating.
A flock of fish will feel great in a spacious aquarium with places for shelters in the form of a pile of snags, stones or decorative elements.
They will become a reliable refuge for females and males during spawning. Plants look beautiful on sandy soil. They bring the living conditions of fish in the aquarium closer to their natural environment.
For this purpose, it is recommended to use various mosses, ferns, and some hardy plants, for example, hornwort. In the aquarium, 1/10 of the water is replaced weekly with fresh water, and the soil is periodically cleaned of organic waste.
Peculiarities of the behavior of the Azrakian carpfish
When kept together with other species of aquarium fish, the Azrackian carp carp behaves too aggressively during spawning. In addition, he has special requirements for the composition of the water, so it is better to keep this species of fish separately from other inhabitants. In 1983, the Azrak carpfish was first described as a new species of killer fish.
The males are very belligerent towards each other and often sort out relationships, especially during the mating season. As a result of sexual selection, a strong male will soon be revealed, the rest tend to hide from him among the plants. In such cases, 2-3 females and one male should be placed in the aquarium together.
Reproduction of the Azrackian carpfish
With the right content and the right conditions, the Azrakian carp carp breeds at home. The mating season begins in the summer and lasts until the fall. During spawning, the male’s outfit becomes especially bright, he selects a site in the aquarium and looks after the females. The selected territory is strictly controlled and protected from the invasion of other males. Often the male behaves too aggressively, and the females hide in the thickets of plants, if they are not yet ready to lay eggs.
The female spawns a small bunch of eggs for a short period of time, attaching eggs to the plants with thin threads.
After spawning, the fish do not show interest in their offspring and can even eat their own caviar. For development, caviar is carefully transferred together with the plant to a separate aquarium with similar water conditions. After 6-14 days, fry appear from the eggs depending on the water temperature. They are fed nauplii of brine shrimp or flakes or granules ground into flour.
